This isn’t a political post(sorry). It’s actually about toxic chemicals in our daily lives. Disclaimer: it’s late and I’m typing on my phone.
A little over a month ago, a moth got into our house before bedtime. I thought nothing of it until Puddles the cat wouldn’t stop messing with something downstairs while I was trying to sleep. I went down and found the moth hovering around our Bath & Body Works wallflower night light under the stairs. Tired, I unplugged it, set it on the coffee table, and went back to bed.
The following morning Travis noticed it had leaked. I picked it up and a goo was dripping from the wallflower to the table. I got some paper towels to wipe it up…and the paint, clear coat, and everything came up with it, leaving only bare blond wood anywhere the liquid had touched.
I was a little shocked. I mean, I love making my house smell like roasted marshmallows, but if the object responsible is capable of stripping paint and finish clean off wood within a few hours of simply sitting on it, I’m not certain I want to be breathing it in.
I could 100% be overreacting, but maybe not. Most cancers are not genetic (95%), but caused by lifestyle and environmental factors. I’m not saying I eat the way I do to avoid cancer, but if I’m that concerned about what I put in my body, I should include air.
I’ve had a little experience with essential oils but not much. However, I always find myself drawn to cedar wood. Research shows (surprise!) that’s generally connected with the Root chakra, and mine is always out of whack. I started digging deeper. Could I use essential oils to fragrance my home and eliminate this corrosive plug-in? I already make my own deodorant, hand soap, face soap, and baby/personal care wipes. What’s one more homemade good?
Last week I got an email from a local yoga studio with upcoming workshops. An aromatherapy workshop was Wednesday. I signed up to see what it was all about.
I learned a few things about choosing quality oils (make sure the scientific name is on the bottle, see if the company states how the oils are extracted), how to tell if a blend will work (open the bottles and waft them together to get a feel), and how/when to use them. We also got to make our own little spritzers. I made a blend of lavender, sweet orange, frankincense, and rosemary.
I stopped wearing commercial cologne after my favorite blend was discontinued a couple years ago. I can use essential oils not only for the home but as a personal fragrance too – plus the oils have different health and mood benefits.
I clearly have a long way to go here, but I feel it sort of fits the blog theme because I went somewhere (to the aromatherapy class) and I definitely had a misadventure with the wallflower. Also, since the blog focuses on recipes, I hope to have some essential oil recipes soon!
